INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE

ALC LEAD

Active Learning Classroom Project Lead (Interim)

During my postdoctoral supervisor’s one-year sabbatical, I was responsible for overseeing the Active Learning Classroom project at Queen's University. The introduction of these alternative learning spaces on campus has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of evidence-based teaching, growing general interest in the University’s dedication to improving the student learning experience, and encouraging shifts towards student-centred teaching practices. My role included:

Classroom Design

  • Collecting and analyzing feedback data to inform the design of future spaces

  • Collaborating with a cross-campus working group to plan classroom renovations that meet the needs of the community and align with current evidence in teaching and learning spaces

  • Contributing to the Office of the Vice Provost (Teaching and Learning) Classroom Renewal Committee to respond to teaching space needs and issues that arise from departments and faculties

Instructor Preparation and Support

  • Designing hands-on orientation workshops to co-facilitate with colleagues from IT Services

  • Holding individual consultations upon request to support educators in redesigning their courses to integrate active learning

  • Implementing “sandbox” sessions for instructors to try classroom technologies and strategies in a supportive environment

  • Creating guides for classroom technology to supplement orientation sessions

Research and Evaluation

  • Investigating instructor and student experiences to contribute to broader literature about teaching and learning spaces

  • Collaborating with Queen’s University International Centre and the Office of Equity to design data collection about diverse learners and teachers in active learning spaces that will inform future instructor support

Promoting Active Learning Classrooms

  • Redesigning and administering the Queen’s Active Learning Classroom website to streamline information for prospective classroom users

  • Preparing presentations and tours for visitors from other institutions, prospective classroom instructors, and donors to demonstrate classroom features and introduce the evidence base that informs the ALC project

I organized and hosted the CTL’s annual day-long Showcase of Teaching and Learning at Queen's, which provided 20 instructors a chance to present their innovative teaching strategies to other educators and enhance the University’s culture of teaching.
